Dengue Fever in Delhi
Notice by Prasada about the outbreak of Dengue fever in East Delhi
Joy has just phoned me to tell us that she has just been visiting a group in Asok Nagar, a poor area of Delhi and has found that the area is currently badly affected by an outbreak of dengue fever.
It is a very poor area of the city, but has a lovely, very devout Buddhist group. Dharmavidya and I visited them for an afternoon when we were in Delhi two years ago and were delighted by their enthusiasm and singing. Apparently a lot of people are sick and four have died. Joy is not allowing volunteers to go to the area but is continuing to go there herself because she feels the people there have been absndonned by the authorities, who refuse to spray the mosquitos because it is a poor area. No one can afford mosquito nets or other deterrants.
APPEAL FOR HELP
Joy has already bought Mosquito nets and has taken all the insect deterrant sprays they have to help the people. She also wishes to purchase netting to cover windows to try to keep the mosquitoes out of the houses. This will be more effective since dengue spreading mosquitoes tend to be out in the day time.
This will all cost more than the Delhi project has in its budget, so we would like to send extra money out so that she can do what she can to help control the outbreak. If anyone can help financially or with practical know-how please do get in touch. Any donations towards the costs would be very welcome as our budget is already tight. If you have practical knowledge, do email us and we'll pass it on to Joy. Funds collected will be used for this or future emergencies in the India Project which caters for some of the poorest people in the Indian capital.
