Degree Ceremonies in Newcastle

Rev Sujatin was a guest, as a member of the Chaplaincy team at Northumbria University, at the Congregation at which Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate. As Buddhist Chaplain at Newcastle University, she was a member of the academic procession at two Congregations last week, at one of which Rachel Abel, Amida-shu member, received her degree. This was the first time that Buddhist robes have been worn in the academic procession at the University.

Rachel becomes an Amida-shu member

On the evening of 1st July 2008 Rachel Abel became a member of the Amida School, Amida-shu at a ceremony held at Amida Sanctuary, the home of Amida Newcastle. She also took the Five Precepts in the Amida-shu form of the Five Prayers of Upasikas.

The celebrant was Rev Sujatin, Bellmaster Sophie Williams and the congregation included Rachel's mother, on a visit from Colorado, Rachel's husband Enrique and a friend, regular sangha member Jackie and long-term friend of Amida, David.

A funeral in Newcastle

Sujatin has attended the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Rev Kit Widdows, the Master of St Thomas', in the city centre,who died suddenly on December 8th while giving a talk at another church. Kit was robustly involved in ethical action, enthusiastic about setting up the local inter-faith community and the Newcastle Make Poverty History group. He had a Fair Trade shop within his church. ::link

Service of Thanksgiving

As part of the Newcastle University Chaplaincy team, Sujatin attended an Ecumenical Service of Thanksgiving for those who have donated their bodies for Medical Education and Research.

Rev Sujatin Johnson, Minister with the Order, was appointed as a member of the Northumbria University Chaplaincy team on Friday.

Refuge ceremony at Amida Sanctuary, Newcastle

Yesterday evening we held a Taking Refuge ceremony for Ivan Presho. The celebrant was Rev Sujatin, Minister, Order of Amida Buddha, and the Bellmaster was Rachel Abel of the Amida Newcastle sangha.

Burma - another Newcastle event

Yesterday evening we met up at five pm and walked again for the people of Burma. This was our fourth event and, although there were only three of us this time, we created continued interest, as we walked slowly and chanted 'Amitabha' down the main shopping street of the city ::read more
