We are also happy to do events and network elsewhere in Hawaii do contact Paul or Franco. We expect to continue to do events in North Kohala from time to time, but our main base of activity has moved closer to the centers of population on the island.
The Amida sangha practices Pureland Buddhism. We are affiliated to Amida-shu, based in UK, deriving from the Japanese Pureland tradition. This is Buddhism with a lot of 'ohana spirit. 'Ohana is the Hawaiian tradition of family feeling extending beyond immediate kin to encompass our community. Our primary practice as Pureland Buddhists is to meet up, chant together, enjoy company, discuss both personal and socially important issues, study Buddhism and its application to our lives and society, and enjoy life. We are sociable, socially engaged, and a good community to link up with.
Amida-shu first made contact with Hawaii when the head of the Amida Order, Dharmavidya David Brazier, was invited to come here and give teachings about ten years ago. Visits continued periodically. Then in 2006 through the invitation of the New Moon Foundation members of Amida-shu came to Hawaii on a long term basis. This has led to an upswing in our activity level here. Watch this space - or, even better, pick up the phone and get in touch.
